Nurturing Growth Through Diverse Learning Areas
At Red Kite Preschool, we believe in fostering a love for learning through various program areas. Our curriculum emphasises literacy, nature, science, life skills, creativity, and emotional development.
Literacy: Building a Strong Foundation
Literacy is a skill which unlocks all the other subjects in your child’s future learning. We nurture a love of books and reading by telling stories, singing songs, reading aloud and a whole range of other play-based strategies. We have books available in every room for children to access independently, and they love to pull teachers aside to read with them!
Social skills: Making friends
You can teach someone to read at eighty, but if they haven’t discovered how to make (and keep) a friend by the age of eight, they likely never will. We provide children with many social opportunities from an early age, using the ENGAGE Programme (link) along with the many “teachable moments” which arise every day to help children to be part of a group, and to understand and express their emotions.
Cultural diversity: Being accepting of all
We live in a diverse city, in an increasingly diverse country. We value the many cultures present in our centre, and we encourage tolerance and kindness. We reflect our families’ heritage in the stories and songs we use, the food we eat and the resources we provide for our children to play with.
Nature: Connecting with the Environment
Children explore the outdoors, fostering curiosity and respect for nature. Our older children make excursions outside the centre to parks and the local community, bringing back all sorts of treasures to "home base". We also provide spacious outside play areas, and experiences of growing plants, finding bugs and enjoying the natural world for all ages.
Science: Discovering the World Around Us (STEM)
Our science activities spark wonder and critical thinking. What’s engineering to a four-year-old? It might be getting that block tower just a bit taller. Or it might be figuring out how to make a tunnel in the sand pit that doesn’t collapse. Counting, sorting, thinking about how things work and fiddling and tinkering are all activities we encourage.
